Eric was the 3rd of four sons born to Sven Herman Liljestrand and Ethel Hardy. He was born on 16 Mar 1918 in Chengdu, China where his father was doing medical missionary work. Eric was married to Isabel Jean Kennedy, and they raised four children.

Eric passed away on 26 Nov 2005 in San Luis Obispo, California. He is buried in Los Osos Valley Memorial Park.
